President Donald Trump has set new tariffs for countries across the globe.

The new regime will not happen today as expected.

Instead, the tariffs will kick in on August 7th to give customs and border protection more time to prepare.

The so-called universal tariff for goods coming into the U.S. will stay at 10%, the same level

that was put in place on April 2nd. But that will only apply to countries that the U.S. exports

to more than it imports. A senior Trump administration official says that applies to most countries, but about

40 nations the US has a trade deficit with will have a new tariff floor of 15%. And as CNN's

Richard Quest explains, others will pay significantly more. Canada has been hit at 35% because

the president doesn't think that they've been negotiating in good faith.

If you are Switzerland, which for some reason that I don't quite fully understand,

has a 39% tariff or South Africa with a 30% tariff, you're not very happy.

Laos 40% it exports, you're not very happy. Laos, 40%.

It exports certainly electronics to the United States.

India hit with 25%.

Syria.

Now, we all thought Syria was a friendly country,

bearing in mind the new regime that's in Damascus

seemed to get well with President Trump.

He's lifting sanctions, but they've been clobbered with arguably the highest of 41%.
