and it now seems that he was serious, along with a lot of other things that we kind of maybe thought he was joking about.

In a Republican conference meeting on Monday, Donald Trump discussed how the United States

could replace income tax by using tariffs instead. Let me show you this.

We're going to establish a very fair, a very fair system where money is going to come into our coffers and

America is going to be very rich again and it's going to happen very quickly.

It's time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before.

Now look, from there, Donald Trump goes on to explain the history of how the United States

used to fund the federal government, not through taxes, but instead through tariffs, charges

on foreign goods.

He notes a period between 1870 and 1913 when this policy led to prosperity in the United

States.

He said, so much prosperity, we didn't even know what to do with all the money.
