Good evening. I'm Jacob Soberoff in for Stephanie Ruhl, and welcome to the midweek nightcap.

It is day 213 of the second Trump administration. And tonight, the Texas

House approved new congressional maps that will likely give Republicans five new seats in the

midterm elections. The state Senate will take it up tomorrow and Governor Greg Abbott could sign it

as early as this Friday. It is a major win for President Donald Trump who pushed Abbott to call

the special session for this very reason. Texas Democrats returned to vote two weeks after they fled

the state to protest the redistricting plan. Listen to what Vice Chair of the House Democratic caucus

said after it passed. We knew as members of the minority party that we were not going to be able to kill this

map indefinitely.

But what we did know is that we had to get the story out.

The battle isn't over.

We have to take this to the courts.

And I feel very confident that these maps will be found unconstitutional. These are the most racist

gerrymandered maps Texas has passed since the 1960s and the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

This is a blatant power grab and everybody should be paying attention and really the Republican
