Hey, good morning. It's Sunday, February 8th, and we begin this hour with the how-to guide being drafted right now by Donald J. Trump on how to collapse a winning political coalition.

Back in 2024, Donald Trump won the presidential election largely because a lot of people believed

in his economic message that he could bring down the prices of groceries as he said he would.

He ran up the margins in several important demographics performing better among Hispanic,

black, Asian, and younger voters than ever before.

But the fragile coalition that powered his return to the White House is already collapsing

in front of us, and so is the illusion that he peddled that he alone can fix the country's

problems, which is bad news for the Republican Party right now, which is struggling to find a winning

message ahead of November's midterm elections to help that party maintain its tiny majority

in Congress. The chaos that Trump

has unleashed onto American streets with his brutal immigration crackdown is driving many of the

voters that Republicans need away, particularly Hispanic voters who are being terrorized, torn apart,

and racially profiled in their own communities by ICE and other federal officers. The political upheaval

caused by Trump's hardline policies is already having an effect on elections. In New Jersey's

off-year gubernatorial race last November, the Democrat, Mikey Sherrill, beat the Trump-backed Republican

candidate by 14 points. Now, that's not necessarily a big surprise, considering that New Jersey

is typically a solid Democratic state. But just a year prior in the elections of 2024, one year

prior to that, the state saw a massive shift to the right. In fact, in 2020, Joe Biden easily

carried New Jersey by 16 points.

But in 2024, Kamala Harris won by just six points.

That was a 10-point swing in New Jersey to the right in favor of Republicans.
