Good evening from New York. I'm Chris Hayes. The mayor of Los Angeles is set to announce a curfew in parts of L.A. tonight coming as the Trump administration is engaged in on audacious authoritarian escalation against the people of California.

Donald Trump has federalized the National Guard against demonstrators in parts of Los Angeles who are protesting his administration's indiscriminate mass deportation. He's authorized 4,000 National Guard troops the area. There are already

more than 2,000 on site with more on the way. That is a lot, just to be clear. He has also deployed

700 active duty Marines to the area,

which is an astounding escalation and should not be conflated legally with sending in the National Guard.

And to get into that tonight as the show goes on. And during an event at Fort Bragg today,

in front of uniformed troops.
