President Trump says he'll temporarily suspend all immigration into the United States. He tweeted his plans last night saying he'll sign an executive order to make it happen.

Trump says it's in response to what he called the invisible enemy.

Of course he's talking about the new coronavirus,

and he says he's doing it specifically to protect American jobs because of the pandemic's impact on the economy.

At this point, it's still not clear when or how the policy would be carried out.

For now, administration officials told the Wall Street Journal, this order won't make big changes to U.S. policy,

meaning it likely won't address the removal of any immigrants already in the U.S.

And as far as new immigration goes, the Trump administration has already made

immigration nearly impossible in recent weeks.

Most visa processing has stopped.

Citizenship ceremonies have been postponed, and the refugee program was paused.

Migrants caught crossing the US-Mexico border are now immediately sent back.
