Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service. I'm Celia Hatton coming to you live from our studio in central London.

Well, it's not an exaggeration to say that globally, the focus this hour is firmly on the White House.

For weeks, Donald Trump has been telling us that today is the day he would announce

his grand plan for tariffs. In the next few minutes, the U.S. President is expected to

announce sweeping tariffs, which we can also describe as import taxes, which could have far-reaching

effects on every country that sells products to the U.S. I'm looking at television screens

that are ready to show the announcement live and I can see that the president has just left

the White House. He's shaking hands and he is walking towards the podium to make that announcement.

For now, though, let's remind ourselves that the president has long been a fan of

tariffs. This is what he told podcast host Joe Rogan back before the election in October.

To me, the most beautiful word, and I've said this for the last couple of weeks, in the dictionary

today, and is the word tariff. It's more beautiful than love. It's more beautiful than anything. It's the most

beautiful word. This country can become rich with the proper use of tariffs.

Well, I can see that the president has just arrived at the podium. We're going to keep an eye on

what he's saying. Actually, no, we're going to cross now to Donald Trump. Let's listen to what he has to say. His destiny was reclaimed,

and the day that we began to make America wealthy again, going to make it wealthy, good and wealthy.

For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, and plundered by nations near and far,

both friend and foe alike, American steelworkers, auto workers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen.

We have a lot of them here with us today.

They really suffered gravely.

They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs.

Foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once
