Summary

It is hard for humans to survive on their own.  They need a tribe.  Challenges and pressures are hard on an individual in a group, but much greater for an individual in isolation. We talk about the ancient tribal human behaviors: loyalty, inter-reliance, cooperation - that flare up in communities during times of turmoil and suffering.  What can we learn from our tribe?  What can we do to help our tribe flourish.

East Coast Executive Producer, Andy Jones-Wilkins and Brian Chontosh sit around the table to talk about the Sebastian Junger book, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging.  Don met Brian, a decorated and retired Major in the Marine Corp and Navy Cross recipient, international adventure racer last year as they were experiencing the Tahoe 200-mile Endurance Run.

Under Armour, Scott Under Armour. Under Armour just got through with their inaugural mountain

0:11.8

running series race out in a bachelor mountain just this last weekend. And we heard through

0:19.4

our contacts at Under Armour that Cody Reed won the 50K in a tie with a guy named Mario

0:25.9

Mendoza. And that was for the 50K and our own you Wang. Yes. She actually took the half

0:33.9

marathon distance. She was kind of doing a recovery run. I think and she still won that.

0:38.3

How nice to do a recovery run and stand on a podium. I saw some photos and it was not

0:43.6

just a mountain running competition. It looked like a festival for ultra running. And we described

0:49.1

that on this podcast coming coming up a trail gathering. It is. And if you missed that

0:55.7

race at bachelor, we actually have some two other locations that are coming up one in

1:01.3

Killington and one in Copper Mountain. If you go to our partners page, you will see a

1:07.6

banner there for Under Armour mountain running. You can click on that and you can see and register

1:14.2

for those races. And if you enter the code TR Nation, you can get a 20% off discount on your

1:21.5

registration. Killington, when give us some dates, Scott, you gave us locations. I need some

1:25.4

dates so I can see if my calendar is free. Coming up in Killington is on August 18th through the

1:31.1

20th. And you're saying, wait a minute. Why is it so many days? It's because they have a race

1:35.8

distance for everyone from 5K 10K. There's a vertical challenge. There's a marathon relay. So if

1:41.5

you have a bunch of friends you want to run a marathon with, there's a half marathon, a full

1:45.3

marathon, and a 50K. So that's why it spread over so many days. Killington Vermont on August 18th

1:52.9

through the 20th. And back in the Rocky Mountains at Copper Mountain, Colorado, on September 8th

1:59.4

through the 10th. Scott, do you think there might be somebody that runs more than just one of the

2:03.9

races? I like to throw that challenge out there. Register for like three of them every day.

2:11.0

I do understand though you get bonus points for wearing their new trail shoes.
