Summary

Andy Hetzel is the Rick Kane of snowboarding. Hailing from Arizona, Andy's first love was skateboarding, then punk rock. This eventually led to Andy finding snowboarding and moving his life to Breckenridge. He competed early and often and achieved pro status, but Hetzel won't be remembered for contests, well maybe as the reigning World Mogul Champion. But, outside of that bump title, Andy and the skate-influenced crew he rode with, you know, the Palmer and Ranquet types, helped create the derelict culture of the sport when it wasn't considered a sport, it was a lifestyle. It's a fun history lesson, and Utah legend Benny Pelligrino asks the Inappropriate Questions.

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:17.1

I'm your host, Mike Powell, and this week I'm not going to give you a full update on my wife

0:21.7

and her cancer. I'm going to give you a brief one until we know more about what's going on.

0:26.4

First, for those that are new, Anne was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in October of

0:31.5

2022. She had a lifesaving surgery, 12 rounds of chemo, and she beat it. We celebrated. We enjoyed summer of

0:38.8

2023, and then this thing came back as stage 4 colon cancer. So, after another major surgery,

0:45.3

we were 11 rounds into a different chemotherapy. And recently, we had blood work that was very

0:50.6

promising, but the doctors were still telling us that Andrew would be on this chemo for life as long as it was managing the cancer. So that was a little hope for us, but also a bummer.

1:00.0

I mean, who wants to be on chemotherapy for life? But then we had a CT scan to see where things were,

1:06.0

and after the doctor looked at that, he was like, well, I want to get you in for a PET scan just to make sure things are where I think they are. While the PET scan did light up in some of her lymph nodes, the doctor's

1:15.3

prognosis went from, you're in chemo for life, to you have a choice. And this is the first time that we

1:20.6

felt like we had a choice throughout this whole thing. So our choice now is being that we can do another major surgery to get rid of the cancer,

1:29.7

and if that doesn't work, we can do radiation.

1:31.3

Why is it a choice?

1:35.0

I mean, it sounds like a no-brainer, but the choice is do we start with surgery?

1:37.0

If we do and it works, great.

1:41.0

But if we were to start with radiation, and the radiation doesn't work,

1:44.3

that means surgery is off the table because of the additional scar tissue that radiation would cause. But when you look at it on paper, radiation seems relatively

1:49.4

painless compared to what Ants has gone through. It's like five treatments and she could be done

1:53.5

in a month. Needless to say, we now have hope of a life without cancer, which we didn't have a
