In the first few months of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces advance swiftly from the north, east and south, occupying thousands of square miles of Ukrainian territory.

Describing the occupation in terms of ground gained of course doesn't paint the whole picture.

All of society, including state institutions, had to reckon with Russian troops from schools, to police stations, to prisons and hospitals.

After occupation, came pacification and the elimination of actors and organisations that Russia thought would be hostile to the new regime.

Torture became an important and horrific tool of Russian rule.

In this episode, I speak to international human rights lawyers Vadim Chogin and Terees Writer from the independent human rights organisation Dignity.

That's the Danish Institute against Torture.

We talked about their work documenting instances of torture and other possible war crimes in the occupied territories.

I started by asking Vadim and Terees to introduce themselves.

My name is Terees Writer. I'm a lawyer by training a human rights lawyer.

Currently and for the past many years, the legal director of Dignity, which is the Danish Institute against Torture,

an organisation working to fight torture in about 20 countries worldwide.

In addition to that, I'm also the vice president of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture,

which inspects prisons and other places of detention in the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, including in Ukraine and Russia.
