I'm Virginia Allen. I'm Samantha Sharis. And this is the day we see the top news for

0:06.1

Thursday, June 1st. Here are today's headlines.

0:20.0

Last night, after months of discussion, debate and compromise, the House passed a bill to raise

0:26.3

the debt ceiling and reduce federal spending. The bill would suspend the current debt limit

0:40.2

of 31.4 trillion until January 1st of 2025. That's about two months after the presidential election

0:48.2

on November 5th, 2024, meaning the current Congress won't have to deal with a debt limit fight

0:54.3

again. The bill does not include as many cuts to federal spending as Republicans wanted,

1:01.2

but it does rescind roughly 30 billion of unspent COVID-19 relief funds. It also completely

1:08.6

funds veterans medical care as promised in the president's budget for fiscal year 2024 and puts

1:15.2

an end to the pause in student loan repayments. Barters will have to start paying on their student

1:20.8

loans again in August. The bill passed with support from Democrats and Republicans,

1:26.4

but more Democrats ultimately backed it. There are currently 222 Republicans in the House 71 of those

1:34.4

Republicans voted against the bill. There are 212 Democrats in the House and just 46 voted against

1:43.3

the bill. Four members did not vote. Now the bill is headed to the Senate. The bill is expected

1:49.3

to face some opposition from both Republicans and Democrats, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer

1:56.8

says there is no margin for error. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says Congress has until Monday

2:03.5

to pass the spending bill or risk default on the debt. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

2:10.0

says he will support the bill without delay. But if Senate leadership allow senators to introduce

2:16.5

amendments to the bill and those amendments pass, then the bill would have to head back to the House

2:22.5

for a vote. The Senate may hold a vote on the bill as soon as tonight. Stay tuned.

2:28.3

Today is June 1st, the first day of what has been dubbed gay pride month, but a professor at

2:34.8

Princeton is working to rebrand the month. Princeton professor Robert P. George has declared June
