Good evening. Tonight a conversation with my colleague Conrad Black writing for the

National Post about the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Conrad says it is always under

pressure from some members of the Conservative Party who wanted to raise its own funds and

no longer be in some fashion subsidized by the state. On the other hand, the Liberal Party

now in power many years believes that the CBC is a helpmate and wants to subsidize it

the more. I learned from Conrad that the CBC can be divided into four parts. There's French

radio and English radio. Those are two. There's French TV and there's English TV. Three of those

are very successful. French radio and French TV. And English radio is very excellent and

successful across the country. The weak member of the quartet is English TV, perhaps because

it spends a deal of time unhappy with Canada according to Conrad. In any event, all of this

lends to a positive air for having a national broadcaster, especially radio that allows

the Canadian people to experience the news. Canada is a G7 country. I endorse National

Public Radio in this country and the public broadcasting company, system company because

they are a national voice. And in small towns across America, especially college towns,

National Public Radio is extremely successful. Very, very prominent. Morning edition. My

many years in my writers, Garrett and Manhattan, the radio news I listened to each morning was
