Summary

Optimize your nutrition, optimize your fitness, optimize your sleep. Optimizing is the new hacking, but somehow more sophisticated. But lost in the world of high-tech solutions for squeezing the most out of your time and your life is the very human need to actually live. When you're busy counting macros, it's easy to forget that meals are meant to be enjoyed, and when you're hooked up to a heart monitor and a Strava account, you're definitely not doing the same kind of running our ancestors did. In this episode of the Outlier Health Podcast, Matt and Matt explore optimization culture and ask the questions: Is all this optimization worth the enjoyment it costs us? And does it really help with health at all?

So Matt, I broke out the mouth taping devices over the past four or five days after our last conversation.

0:09.0

I did and I have a reason for it. I know in that conversation I was pretty down then. I said they didn't work.

0:15.0

They only woke me up in the night and I pulled them off or they would get lost in the bed.

0:19.0

You know, just didn't work and didn't do anything to actually improve my sleep.

0:22.0

But I realized... and didn't do anything to actually improve my sleep.

0:27.4

But I realized what the distinction is. That, trying to put that on, you know,

0:29.5

to do an already okay sleep maybe is sort of of optimizing right it's looking for that

0:34.2

little bit of edge to get yourself to be nose breathing what I was known wasn't

0:39.0

that it was that I've like for the past really ever since I moved in this house

0:42.3

it's been like a year now I wake

0:45.1

up with my mouth like completely dry like sandpaper my tongue cheeks everything completely

0:49.1

dry and I've been in a particularly bad spell of sleep recently and it occurred to me that maybe the mouth dryness is actually like the cause of my waking up and probably like that.

0:59.3

So then I said I started using them and it's actually been pretty well and I've worked pretty well

1:04.1

surprised at how quickly you can kind of train yourself to to breathe that way again

1:08.9

but I was asking myself what was the difference and I decided that what it was and that actually

1:13.2

became the inspiration for this episode. I decided that like in that case I was I was diagnosing a problem and I was fixing it by seeking out

1:20.3

a you know a solution like you might if there was too much light coming in your room or if you're always

1:24.3

waking up hot then you seek out a solution. But I think that's very different from from

1:29.2

optimizing and trying to trying to do everything you can to gain that edge.

1:34.0

And it goes for nutrition and fitness and everything else as well.

1:37.0

So that's what we're going to talk about today.

1:39.0

But anyway, aside from that, before we get too deeply and how are you doing and how are you sleeping?
