the future. The future ain't what it used to be. In the past isn't what we think it was either.

This is hell it's easy to think the way it is now is the way it has

always been to some extent sure I mean new technologies arise, tastes change, events take place that seem at least earth-shattering

at the time, but some of what we think has always been is actually relatively new. It's easy to think as British

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher insisted we do that there is no alternative when we understand conditions as natural the way things

have always been throughout all human history that your claim there was no chance

but to prioritize corporate power and private profit over social services and the common good, which is at the root of increasing inequality. Of course, she did all this under the rhetorical guise of free markets, free trade

and globalization. Many may think that there is no alternative when it comes to

policing and prisons as well.

That's sure, defunding the police and ending mass incarceration are worthy causes.

But we're going to still need police and prisons because that's the only way it has always been and there are no other options when it comes to addressing crime, especially violent even the most heinous deadly crimes.

But what if that is, in fact, not the way it has always been?

What if there are examples in human history

and examples still taking place today

of societies that do not use individual punishment

to fight what we may call crime.

What if there are alternatives to police and prisons
