Summary

Tim Brown is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO alongside Joey Zwillinger of footwear company, Allbirds. In just under a five years, the company has amassed over 500 employees, 17 retail locations and over a billion dollars in valuation.  What most may not know is that this idea was the brainchild of Tim's for years while he was a professional soccer player.

Having played for the Newcastle Jets, the Welllington Phoenix and the 2010 World Cup, Tim began designing sneakers and visiting factories to create more than hundreds of variations for a prototype shoe all during his offseasons. What started as just a fun idea for the athlete transformed into a successful Kickstarter campaign which eventually led to joining forces with his Co-CEO Joey in creating one of the most popular shoe brands today.

In this episode, Tim breaks down his transition from professional soccer to brand building and how despite the doubt, these challenges empowered the CEO to bring his idea to fruition. He also highlights the importance transitioning Allbirds into a sustainable product using merino wool and recycled plastics to leave a carbon neutral footprint—because for Tim,  a product can only be great if it is sustainable.

From Hype Beast Radio, I'm Jeff Staples, and this is the business of hype, a show about creative entrepreneurs, brand builders, innovators, and the realities behind the dreams they've built.

0:35.8

This week's guest on the show isn't your typical hype beast.

0:39.7

In fact, some might say the brand he started is actually the polar opposite to what a hype beast represents.

0:46.7

But I don't do this show to only talk to one demographic.

0:50.5

This is the business of hype.

0:52.2

And what I want to do on this show is talk with individuals who have built brands and companies that people love, and not only love, but maybe even worship.

1:02.7

This week's guest has accomplished that in record time.

1:06.5

He's built a massive business with extreme loyalists around his product in a category that

1:12.1

is notoriously impossible to crack.

1:15.4

Tim Brown is the co-founder and CEO of a brand called Albert's, a company that's only five

1:21.7

years old with over 500 employees, 17 retail stores international, and is now valued at over $1.4 billion.

1:32.1

And not to mention, this is all birth from one perfectly sustainable shoe.

1:38.7

Now, if you don't know what Allbirds is, there's a high chance you've seen this brand

1:43.0

without even realizing what it was.

1:45.7

And as cliche as it sounds, if you had a dollar for every time you've seen these shoes on someone's

1:51.2

foot, you'd probably have enough money to retire by now. You might have even seen their ads

1:56.4

heralded as the world's most comfortable shoe. But this is no Nike, Adidas, or Under Armour.

2:03.4

This is a product that is changing the narrative of how footwear can be made. It's a product

2:08.3

that took Mr. Brown hundreds of iterations, fighting through thousands of naysayers, and grinding

2:14.6

through years to perfect. From a single shoe, a complex material, and a relentless determination birthed an idea that

2:23.7

turned this former professional soccer player and World Cup athlete into creating what is now

2:29.7

a billion dollar footwear brand.
