Matthew 24: 42-51 - 'He is coming at an hour you do not expect.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 673 (in 'The glorious advent of Christ, the hope of Israel') - Since the Ascension Christ's coming in glory has been imminent, even though "it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority". This eschatological coming could be accomplished at any moment, even if both it and the final trial that will precede it are "delayed".

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast. We're going to look at a text today

0:18.7

that is a little bit more difficult. And so we're in the Olivet discourse text today that is a little bit more difficult and so we're in the

0:22.2

olivet discourse and this is one of these texts where if you really want to understand it you've got to

0:27.9

go through the entire discourse in order to really get the context so before we jump into today

0:33.5

I think it's worth mentioning that to fully understand this text, you should probably

0:38.8

start at the start of the Olivet discourse. And if you want to do that, you can see a verse-by-verse

0:44.8

breakdown of Matthew's version of the Olivet discourse as bonus episodes, and you can get access

0:50.5

to those through the Patreon page. So today's text is Matthew chapter 24 versus 42 to 51.

Jesus said to his disciples, stay awake because you do not know the day when your master is coming.

1:06.6

You may be quite sure of this that if the householder had known at what time of the night

1:11.5

the burglar would come, he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed anyone to break

1:16.8

through the wall of his house. Therefore, you too must stand ready because the son of man is coming

1:23.1

at an hour you do not expect. What sort of servant then is faithful and wise enough for the master

1:31.4

to place him over his household to give them their food at the proper time? Happy that servant

1:37.8

if his master's arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you solemnly, he will place him over everything he owns.

1:47.1

But as for the dishonest servant who says to himself,

1:50.7

my master is taking his time, and sets about beating his fellow servants and eating

1:56.3

and drinking with drunkards, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he

2:03.5

does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the hypocrites,

2:10.1

where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. So what's the context here? Well, in the

2:15.9

Olivet discourse, Jesus has been describing the destruction of the temple in AD 70.

2:21.3

And basically that's what he's been talking about in the discourse up till this point.
