Hey there from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle Now. I'm Patricia Murphy. Here are today's

top stories. It's Thursday, September 5th.

The Washington State Republican Party is suing the King County Elections Director. The newly filed lawsuit claims the county illegally used an online tool during the race for public lands commissioner.

The app helped voters fix problems with their ballot. The state GOP alleges the use of the online tool affected the results of the hotly contested primary race. The party backed

Sue Keel Peterson in that race. She lost to Democrat Dave Up the Grove by 49 votes after a hand

recount. The party claims Peterson would have won if the

app hadn't been used. The Democratic Party chair, Shasty Conrad, in a statement called the lawsuit

sad and predictable. Up the Grove will face Republican Jamie Herrera Butler during November's election.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through tomorrow night.

We're expecting highs near 90 over the next couple of days.

But luckily, this heat wave will be short-lived.

U-dub climatologist Nick Bond says September heat usually is.

This time of year, you really need those east winds to make it hot, and they don't come along

all that often. Fire danger continues to threaten parts of the cascades. A red flag warning for

the mountains will remain in effect until 11 o'clock tomorrow night. School is back in session in Seattle, and with the new academic year comes new safety initiatives.
