So at the start of the year, I shared all about extreme ironing, an unironic sport that pushes

competitors to break out their ironing boards and irons in absurd and unusual situations,

like up a tree while canoeing, or at the summit of a mountain.

In a similar vein, with more focus on endurance and meditative

vibes than humor, is the burgeoning sport of extreme sitting, or rather as it's properly

called, desert sitting. With all the headlines over the last decade or so about how sitting

so much is killing us, you might think the last thing we need

right now is a sport focused on sitting for as long as possible. And you may have a point there.

But at the heart of desert sitting is a desire to slow down, to connect with nature, and to step

away from technology and even the concept of time itself. And that sort of unplugging is something that I would say is welcome and needed in our current time.

Although it does seem like at the moment there is only one desert sitting athlete, its founder, Robert Silk.
