Let's look at the main dialogue.

Two people are having a conversation.

I started observing my colleagues more closely.

Making note of everything was the smartest thing I ever did.

I worked hard and when I finally got that promotion,

it was one of the best days of my life.

What an inspiring story.

In this dialogue, this character is describing events in his past using superlatives.

First, he says that making a note of everything was the smartest thing he ever did.

Smartest is the superlative form of smart.

It's formed by appending est to the end of smart. A bit later, he says

when he finally got a promotion, it was one of the best days of his life. Best is the superlative form

of good. By saying it was one of the best days, he implies that there were other days of his life that were of the same or greater quality.
