This Week In Streaming is a show on the Decoding TV podcast feed that covers the most interesting shows available on streaming each week. On this episode, David Chen and Patrick Klepek discuss the first three episodes of One Piece streaming right now on Netflix:
How well did One Piece build its fantastical world? Is it doing enough to satisfy existing fans while drawing in folks not familiar with its source material? Does the main character of Luffy work for us? What filmmaking choices make One Piece feel different than a normal TV show? Listen to hear us discuss all these questions and more!
Next week, Patrick and David will discuss The Continental on Peacock. We’ll also be continuing our coverage of Ahsoka. When possible, we will broadcast the episode live on YouTube, so be sure to follow us there. Thanks for being a paid subscriber!

0:30.5 | It's all about being |
0:34.3 | Well, that clip did not go like that clip ended prematurely |
0:42.0 | Waiting for what's the bit what's the he was supposed to it's all of it's all about being free is what he's supposed to say and I accidentally cut it off |
0:51.2 | So that's my bad |
0:54.2 | I'm not only the host of this podcast. I also produce it and sometimes it's a lot to handle a lot of straw hats that you're juggling indeed indeed. All right. Well anyway, welcome to this week and streaming a decoding TV podcast |
1:08.2 | Each week this week and streaming covers a show that's new and interesting the world is streaming. I am David Chen. I'm Patrick. |
1:15.2 | We will tell you if the show we're covering this week is worth watching will review and spoil it and discuss the entire season of the show if it is today we're going to be discussing season one of Netflix's one piece |
1:29.2 | Which is all all eight episodes of which are streaming right now next week. I want to announce we'll be continuing our coverage of Asoka and also covering the Continental |
1:39.2 | I show that takes place in the universe of John Wick, which will be streaming on peacock. So next week Asoka will be doing another mini soda and Asoka and then covering the Continental |
1:50.2 | Just a quick programming note. Asoka episodes come out on Tuesday. So our recap of a circle be out on Wednesday and Continental episodes come out on Friday. So that's when you'll be hearing our discussion of that show. |
2:02.2 | So today we're going to be discussing one piece and I want to just introduce the topic a little bit. One piece is based off of the Japanese mega series written and illustrated by EO Tura Oda that spans over 106 volumes and has sold over 500 million copies in 61 countries. |
2:21.2 | It's also been developed into an animated feature film and over a dozen television specials. It's now been developed into a live action American series for Netflix all eight episodes of the first season are streaming right now. |
2:33.2 | Patrick Clepick and I have seen the first three. So we'll share our overall thoughts and then dive into detailed conversations about what happens in these first three episodes. |
2:45.2 | But first Patrick Clepick, let's talk about our overall thoughts and what we thought of this series and most importantly, whether or not we're going to continue covering the show, but let's start with overall thoughts. What did you think of one piece you and I have had basically no exposure really to the manga, right? |
3:00.2 | We haven't read the manga. We haven't watched the TV series on which it's based or any of the films. So we're coming to this just cold as as TV watchers discerning TV viewers. What do you think one piece on Netflix? |
3:16.2 | I was so curious because some of the pitch on this one was that the creator was so deeply involved in the adaptation. |
3:27.2 | And I feel like that's not always the case when you have these sort of live action adaptations, which Netflix has definitely been on a tear with the last couple of years as they really pushed into anime to be one of the big expansive demographics that they're interested in hitting. |
3:43.2 | And this one seemed like if any of these are going to hit, maybe this is the one, but I feel like we also said that potentially about cowboy bebop and is potentially set about death note and it's potentially set up. |
3:56.2 | Let's just go back to each previous one. Maybe this maybe this is the time where the like very specific stylings and tone of anime will make sense in live action. |
4:07.2 | Even though we have lots of evidence that that is an extremely difficult tone to adapt into into live action. And here because it's so long running, it's so beloved. |
4:19.2 | I for me thought like, hey, the idea of looking at a thousand like anime episodes of like thousands of manga books to work through. That's just too much. Like that's a stack. I'm looking at it. It's too high. I'm never going to get there. |
