This might be controversial.

The story of my family's history is a real sort of slap in the face to the American dream

because if what you're supposed to do here is arrive on the shores and do better than

the generation that came before you, in my family we like to make sure we do worse.

It's very important.

My great-grandfather was a surgeon.

My grandfather, his son, was just a regular doctor.

My mother, his daughter, is a psychotherapist.

For me, her daughter, I'm just not anything.

I've done a bunch of different stuff professionally and I say that in quotes because all that I

really care about is making sure I don't earn too much money.

I consider myself a sort of professional under-erner because if I earn too much money, well

then I insult my family's legacy.
