On January 14, 1980, Sophie Barrera was ready to leave work at just before 5 p.m.

She owned a dental lab in St. Louis, and when she got into her red 1975 Ford Pinto,

she already knew that she was probably on someone's hit list, but she couldn't stop living her life.

The previous year, someone had planted a bomb just outside her garage, clearly in an attempt

to kill her, but the bomb had gotten soaked with rain and didn't detonate properly.

Nine months later, that person would succeed in their second attempt when Sophie backed her

car over a pressure switch that caused the dynamite under

her driver's seat to explode. It didn't take long to connect her murder to a suspect, but when they

started looking into his past, they soon realized that it was not his first murder. He had been

committing murders for over two decades. This is Monsters. Glenn and Engleman, who went by Glenn, was born on February 6th, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the youngest of four children.

His father had been in the United States Air Force until he left the service and began working

on the railroads. His mother was a reclusive, self-proclaimed psychic.

After graduating from high school, Glenn followed in his father's shoes and enlisted

in the Air Force, sending up serving in World War II. It looks like he served for about five years before

using the GI Bill to enroll at Washington University back in St. Louis. There he studied dentistry

and graduated in 1954.

A year before he graduated, he married a woman named Edna Ruth Ball, but they divorced two years later, never having actually lived together.

During those two years, Glenn lived with his mother, and Edna lived in student housing.

I bet his mother never saw that coming.

Their divorce would not be the end of their dealings with each other, though.

On June 28, 1958, Edna married a man named James Bullock, and about six months later, he would end up dead.
