0:00.0	Okay, so today there's a lot of stuff I want to talk to you about. I'm going to start off with the
0:07.6	Solomon Ash experiment, which is arguably, in my view, the greatest experiment ever conducted in the
0:15.7	behavioral sciences and in psychology. Of course, the Zimbardo experiment is a great one. Of course, the Stanley Milgram one is a
0:24.8	great one. But Solomon Ash is beautiful for two reasons. Number one, it is incredibly simple and
0:33.8	elegant in its design. And yet, number two, it demonstrates something unbelievably powerful
0:40.3	about a universal phenomenon. And that is the astounding cowardice of people when it comes to succumbing
0:52.3	to herd mentality, to succumbing to group conformity.
0:56.0	So for those of you who don't remember or have never heard of it, the experiment goes as follows.
1:02.2	You bring in people into the lab, you sit them down, let's say eight of them.
1:06.6	The first seven that are seated are actually in on the experiment,
1:11.0	they're Confederates, but they're pretending to be really actual subjects.
1:15.1	It's only the eighth person in that queue that is the actual subject.
1:19.9	And you basically show them the following stimulus.
1:23.6	You show them three lines, let's call them ABC,
1:26.8	and then separated from those three lines, you show them another line, let's call them A, B, C, and then separated from those three lines,
1:28.9	you show them another line, call it X.
1:31.5	And the idea is for them to each state which of the three lines, A, B, or C, is the same
1:38.7	length as line X.
1:43.0	And the way that the experiment is set up
1:45.1	is that it is absolutely clear,
1:47.1	short of a person being legally blind,
1:51.1	completely blind, congenitally blind.
