Summary

Is seeking a therapist a new fad? There are seasons in life where we need to seek godly counsel to help us navigate through the trauma and challenges of life. However, I’ve seen a trend of people seeking therapy with no end goal; and sometimes even treating their therapist as a paid-for best friend.

On this new episode of #Fearless, I’ve invited some dear friends who helped me in a difficult season of life and through issues I’ve faced personally. Dr.’s Paul and Virginia Friesen of Home Improvement Ministries have a long history of family ministry, providing godly counsel to those who come to them for help.

Today we’ll discuss the difference between therapy and counsel, what red flags we should keep an eye out for in therapy, and when we need to seek godly counsel.

Welcome to Fearless, helping you have a fearless faith and a compromising culture. Welcome to another episode of Fearless. Today's episode is going to be the last one of the

elephant in the room series and if you've missed

0:34.9

some of those series where we've talked about alcohol inside the church cohabitation or

0:39.2

any of those other episodes you can check them out on my website sissy Graham Lynch.com but in

0:49.6

the church that I think has some dangerous consequences and that is seeking therapy versus godly

counsel. I've been very open about my story I shared on my podcast on an episode

1:00.9

towards the end of last year about my struggles with anxiety and

1:04.7

depression in my pregnancies and how that really just crippled me of who I was.

1:10.2

I struggled with that in all three of my pregnancies but it was during that time

1:15.3

where it was just like extreme darkness in my life for about nine months that I shared my story with a few people in my

1:22.3

kind of inner circle and I was sharing it one day with somebody kind of in tears

1:27.6

and crying and they looked at me and just said s sissy, you need a therapist.

1:34.0

And it kind of took me back a little bit.

1:37.1

I wasn't expecting that.

1:39.1

When all I really needed was somebody

1:41.6

to kind of hug me, to love on me, and to pray for me.

1:47.0

And that's when I realized I kind of saw this trend happening over the last 10 years, but especially

1:52.3

now where we're seeking kind of therapy and therapist in the place of maybe the Holy Spirit and the place of Godly counsel and the place of just a faith community around us.

2:04.8

And I want to be, you know, just very up front
