Before launching into anger in Say, I wanted to give an introduction of kinds to just this whole

retreat. I realize you've already been welcomed. You've already socialized much. You've had many

cups of coffee, perhaps cups of other things as well.

But now that you're here, I thought it might be helpful to give an explanation for why you might be here.

Or rather, why a retreat on anger? One possible reason is that when Father Gregory and I were getting together, we were both angry.

And we thought it would be a nice opportunity to work out our issues with an audience.

That's a possibility.

Another possibility is that we together made the following observations. One, anger is abundant in our culture,

and we don't always know how to respond to it. Yesterday's reading for lots is from Ephesians.

This is a quote, or part of that quote is, get rid of all anger, all passion. So there's a typically Christian

response that looks with a little suspicion on anger. There's also what you might call

an unthinking secular approach that's pretty pragmatic and it says anger is super

powerful. If you want to do a heavy lift in the gym, you don't put on handle. Or if you do, you're very strange. You put on music that most people of older generations would call angry music. Or if you're like me, right before your doctoral defense, you watch gladiator. so anger has great power and potential to motivate us

for doing good or at least for doing something but it also comes to us with a little
