On October 23, 1979, a woman was riding horseback through Bedgebury Forest in Ken England when she happened upon the battered, bruised, mutilated body of a female lying out in the open.

Lying next to her was a wooden stake that, when police were called to the scene, was taken into custody as the murder weapon.

With no purse, no wallet, and nothing in the way of identification, the woman was declared a Jane Doe who, as far as police

could tell, had been brutally murdered up to five days before her discovery. The Bedgebury Forest

woman, as she would come to be known, was likely between the ages of 30 to 35 years old,

was just about 5 foot one, had a slim build with brown eyes and straight dark brown

hair that came to her shoulders. She was wearing black shoes, a floral dress, and a black

polo jumper and yellow blouse. Now, while working with what they had, police took one look at her

distinctive dress and hoped that it would help to identify the woman, especially when they found out that it had been homemade from furniture fabric and had likely been purchased for a charity or a second-hand shop.

A more in-depth look at the body found that the woman, who had stretch marks that indicated she may have given birth

at least once before, had been suffering from an ectopic pregnancy when she was killed, and was,

in addition to bleeding for the last two to three weeks of her life, was likely in extreme pain.

Given what they learned from her body and clothing, police determined that she was likely a person of lower income and, given the lack of carbon deposits in her lungs, probably lived out in the countryside, though they did say that she was probably a regular hitchhiker and possibly a sex worker.
