the Oracle of Delphi. It's right there in your title. What was the full meaning of the command

above the entrance? Yeah, a lot of people associate the title, Know Thyself, with Socrates and Plato.

And although it is something that they spent a lot of time

talking about and thinking about, originally it goes back to the Oracle of Delphi. It was an inscription

above this temple to Apollo, where people would go to request guidance from the Oracle, the Pithia.

And I think it's really telling that right from the get-go in our exploration of the

genesis of Western education, that we have this combination between education and intellectual

pursuit and then also this fuller sense of pilgrimage, this religious sense of the aspect of formation of the whole person.

The formation of the whole person, that's a phrase, the full self, know thyself through and

through as far as one can. That doesn't really go along with what we read in, say,

Common Core or many state standards.

That puts you a little out of the mainstream, yeah?
