0:19.2	over time. Back in 2015, a flight going from Sydney, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was preparing to take flight.
0:28.5	Before takeoff, the pilots entered the coordinates for the destination into the plane's navigation system.
0:35.0	The coordinates were 0-5109.8.
0:39.0	Now while the flight was safe and comfortable for the passengers, it turned out to be about seven hours too short.
0:46.0	Instead of taking a nine hour flight to Malaysia, this flight took a two-hour journey to Melbourne.
0:54.2	What happened?
0:55.7	Well, it was a relatively minor miscalculation.
0:59.3	The pilot entered the coordinates of 05109.8, which is so, so close to the coordinates for Malaysia,
1:09.2	but not quite close enough.
1:10.8	What the pilot should have entered was 1-509.8. If you're paying attention there, the pilot was just one number off.
1:19.0	But the difference between
1:25.0	Malaysia and Melbourne.
1:28.0	Think about that for a moment.
1:29.2	The flight was just one number off in coordinates. but it created a positional error of over 11,000 kilometers.
1:37.8	That's 6,835 miles for those of you trying to figure out the imperial distance. Now experts
1:43.9	chalked this scenario up to a simple data entry error. The distance between
1:49.1	that zero and that one and the coordinates it seems small on paper but it was an immense difference
1:55.6	over the course of the journey it's the distance between two totally different
