0:18.0	Many people associate the oldest recording device with the name Thomas Edison and his phonograph invented in 1877.
0:25.0	And while Edison's invention was indeed a monumental achievement in science and technology,
0:30.0	the oldest recording of a human voice predates him by nearly 20 years.
0:36.0	Around 1857, León Scott de Martinville invented the phone autograph,
0:41.0	a device that could capture sound waves.
0:44.2	And with that device, he captured the oldest human voice ever recorded.
0:48.4	It's his own voice singing the French folk song,
0:51.6	Arclaire de la Loon.
0:53.7	If you try to listen to it online, you'll notice how scratchy and muffled his voice is.
0:58.6	One of the reasons for that is due to the limitations of technology.
1:02.2	While the phone autograph could record a human voice, it actually
1:05.4	couldn't play it back for others to hear. In fact, being able to listen to human voice didn't even
1:12.1	occur to Leon Scott did Martinville.
1:15.0	He just wanted to see if he could capture the sound waves.
1:17.8	The technology allowing us to listen to this earliest recording of a human voice,
1:22.0	well it wasn't developed until over 100 years
1:25.0	after this recording. Maybe I'm weird for thinking this but that absolutely blows my mind.
1:29.8	A voice that was captured remained silent for over a century, but then was eventually brought back to life.
