After immigrating from Ireland, Thomas Flynn settled into a life as a clerk in London sometime in the late 18th century.

There, he fell in love with a young woman from the Hammersmith district of the city and they married in the summer of 1799.

Very little is known about Thomas Flynn's wife, including her name, at least in the records I was able to locate.

But what is certain is that from the start their union was a troubled one.

Within weeks Thomas had grown violent with his new wife. His treatment of her became so intolerable in fact that she fled back to her parent's home.

Thomas followed and convinced her to return to him.

However, any happiness salvaged in their reunion didn't last.

Thomas soon returned to his brutal ways and she once again escaped to the safety of her parent's home.

This time she was determined to sever all ties with her husband and in order to gain some legal assistance to get the process started,

she went before the magistrates to swear the peace against him.

In swearing the peace, the accuser enters a claim in court, swearing that they fear death or bodily harm may be committed against them by the accused.
