On Friday, May 6, 1997, a large black trunk was abandoned in the luggage office at

Charing Cross Station in London. The man who left the trunk had instructed the attendant behind

the counter to handle the case with care before leaving in a taxi as he would be

travelling later in the day. The trunk sat amongst the other abandoned luggage in the stifling

heat until Monday morning. Staff arrived to begin their working week and were hit by a pungent

odour. The source appeared to be coming from the large black trunk.

Instinctively, the rail staff thought the smell and size of the trunk seemed suspicious

and so the police were notified.

An officer arrived and pried open the trunk.

The rotting smell intensified.

He peered down to see five large parcels wrapped in brown paper and tied with string.

He lifted out each heavy package and unwrapped the paper.

In each he found severed bloody body parts wrapped in rags and items of clothing.

The victim's body was taken to Westminster mortuary where top pathologist Sir Bernard

Spilsbury was called in to examine the body which looked to have belonged to a young woman.
