Summary

Today, we’re looking at a virtual meeting between European leaders and Donald Trump, two days before he meets his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump said afterwards that Russia would face "very severe" consequences unless it halted its war in Ukraine.

Alex joins to talk about the UK’s involvement, Ukrainecast’s Vitaly Shevchenko is with Adam in the studio, and Europe correspondent James Waterhouse is in Berlin, where Volodymyr Zelensky was with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

BBC Sounds, Music, Radio, Podcasts. Hello, and please welcome back. Alex Forsyth. Hello. Right, next year when we go to the Edinburgh Festival, if we do that, I think you should come too. I'd love to. I wanted to come this time. Just couldn't make it fit in with being in Westminster. But it was great. Did you have a good time? You get that every night, every night, if only every week on any questions. Yeah. I get my little live audience.

I get my little live audience, bud. But it was great. Did you have a good time? You get that every night, every night, if only every week on any questions.

0:22.7

Yeah.

0:22.9

I get my little live audience buzz. It's a joy. Was it good?

0:26.5

Yeah, really good fun.

0:27.4

Good.

0:27.5

And bizarrely, we are speaking at 6.45 on Wednesday, which means in about 15 minutes, I'll be on BBC 2 interviewing Nicholas Sturgeon. Oh yes, it's in my diary already with stars around it. Do not miss. Although we're in the multiverse because people could have watched it on iPlayer this morning on YouTube yesterday or listened to the whole thing on newscast on Tuesday morning. Adam, we just cannot get enough of you. You are everywhere. It's almost like it's in 3D.

Anyway, right, we're going to be talking about a big day of international diplomacy about

0:59.5

Russia and Ukraine because ahead of that meeting that Donald Trump is having with Vladimir Putin

1:03.7

in Alaska on Friday, all the EU leaders have been meeting and negotiating amongst themselves.

1:09.4

But at several points, Donald Trump and his deputy vice president, J.D. Vance,

1:15.1

appeared in those conversations too.

1:16.8

But before we talk about that, there's so much news around J.D. Vance's holiday in the Cotswolds.

1:22.2

Yeah.

1:22.3

So, and one bit of his holiday in the Cotswolds was actually going to Kent to see David Lamy and his

1:27.3

official residence of Chevening. And then we were talking at one of the newscast live shows about

1:32.1

the giant fishing rods that they had when they did a bit of fishing. But that has now generated

1:36.7

another news story. Yeah, because David Lamy, the Foreign Secretary, didn't have a fishing

1:41.6

license for that fishing experience. So he's had to fess up and he's had to admit that he didn't have the proper license that he needed. He's written to the Environment Agency. He said it was an administrative error and he has now got a proper fishing license. But yeah, I mean, he could even be in line for a fine over this. Yeah, up to 2,500 pounds. Yeah.

2:51.1

The other irony here, if it is an irony, I don't know, might be using that in an Alanis-Morissette way, is that you only need a licence if you're over 13. And actually, the Vance and Lammie children were the ones that caught the fish. Yes, because David Lamey didn't. I mean, this was point. Jadie Vance said that was the one strain on the special relationship was that David Lammie didn't catch a fish and Jad Vance's children did. Right. But there we are. I didn't know the 13 rule. So there you go. You've taught me something about fishing. Important for our next fishing trip. That is never going to happen. Not because I don't want to go on a trip with you, but it's just because I'm not into fishing. Okay, that'll now get lots of newscasters who like fishing annoyed. I'm not, I'm not being disoblaging about fishing. Right, we've learned a lot more about that fishing photo op. Let's learn a lot more about the much more important business that's been going on today, the upcoming negotiations between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which today is taking the form of negotiations between Donald

Trump and lots of European leaders. We will do that on this episode of Newscast.
