The legacy of the Troubles is a subject we've discussed many times on Red Lines

and we thought we'd return to it today, specifically to the issue of how best to tell

the story of the conflict to ourselves and to the wider world.

The Imperial War Museum in London launched its first major exhibition on Northern Ireland,

living with the Troubles at the end of May.

And of course, the Austrian Museum's Troubles and Beyond exhibition has been at the centre of its offer since 2018.

But what are the challenges involved in telling a highly contested narrative to a public which can range anywhere from mild interest to ardent fixation?

And where do concerns like balance, impartiality, taste and context fit in the debate?

With me to discuss all of that and more are Craig Murray, a senior curator at the Imperial War Museum

and the man responsible for that new Troubles exhibition.

Hannah Crowdy is head of curatorial at National Museums N.I.

Julianne Campbell is a former journalist, now a poet and award-winning author,

who's written several books about Bloody Sunday,

and who was instrumental in the redevelopment of the Museum of Free Derry,

which reopened in the city back in 2017.

And Dr Matthew Jackson wrote his PhD thesis on the challenge of remembering the Northern Ireland conflict in public spaces.

Hannah Crowdy, first of all, how big a challenge was it for everyone involved in putting together your Troubles Exhibition at the Ulster Museum five years ago?

To bear all of those complex issues in mind and to get it right?

To be honest, I would say we saw it as an opportunity and a big kind of responsibility for us to do this story justice, to do it right.
