Summary

This week's episode tackles the tropes that Kat and Nadia love (and hate) to see in RPGs. From customizable characters to sewer levels; flowery monologues to confusion status effects, Kat and Nadia talk about the elements that draw their attention, and the elements that immediately turn them off. It's a discussion that delves deep into some of the key components of the RPG genre, and game design in general, and will hopefully get you thinking about the elements you love to hate and see in games as well. Welcome to another episode of Acts of the Blood God, US Gamer's official RPG podcast. I'm your host, Kat Bailey, joining me as always my

lovely co-host, Nadia Oxford. Hello, Kat. How are you? I know you've been having some troubles

with a demon leaf blower outside. No, I'm actually feeling morose about the anniversary of the

0:31.4

end of one-up.com, a site that both of us have in common. Oh, yes. I forgot that was today. You can always count on Bob Mackey to remind

0:38.3

you, and I'm kind of glad he did because, yes, it was a very formative site for myself. It was the

first, like, real, hey, here's some pay for your work site that I worked for. I think my first

piece for them was, of course, like a Mega Man timeline or something like that and I used to do a lot of blogging for them as well.

0:57.0

Were you part of the Mega Man anniversary series that Jeremy did?

1:01.3

I almost certainly was. I know that any time we had a Megaman thing, I was there to contribute and I contributed to so many of them.

1:08.0

I remember, gosh, like when Mega Man 9 came out, we had a lot of pieces

1:12.4

about Mega Man in general because that was like the first revival of the series in a long time.

1:17.1

A lot of people from that community got their start in the games industry because they were

1:21.4

part of one-up. I was one of them. Jeff Grubb over a games beat was one of them. We used to

1:27.2

talk all the dang time over there,

1:28.9

McKinley Noble. Long list, I think. Yeah, I'm glad for social media just so I can keep in touch

1:35.3

with a lot of people I worked with. I was always a little bit of like on the edges because I wasn't

1:40.5

part of the San Fran crew. I was just a remote worker who came in once in a very blue moon.

1:45.4

But, yeah, I still remember and miss all those people.

1:49.1

Yeah, I showed up just in time for the layoffs.

1:52.5

Here I am. There I go.

1:54.5

Yeah, it was pretty grim, unfortunately.

1:56.6

But, I mean, Axe of the Blood God can trace its roots all the way back to Active Time Babel,
