I doubt if any of us were exactly ready to follow the hymns injunction and defend our faith in spite of dungeon, fire and sword. From time to time I'd offer similar reassurances to my atheist father. No dad we weren't being indoctrinated at school, no we weren't being forced to believe

in Noa's arc or learning how to stone infidels in fact the opposite was the case.

I mean we fought back. The more our Christian brother

teachers promulgated religion in class, the more we developed little strategies

of resistance, disingenuous questions about the scientific basis of miracles or please Brother Francis

what's the precise relationship between evolutionary theory and the Garden of Eden?

But of course my father's suspicion about the manner in which a faith school might promote not just

unscientific ideas but also moral notions that conflicted with human rights or accepted

social values has hardly receded since my school days.

Indeed, the increase in faith schools in recent years, I learned that a third of publicly

funded schools are now religious in character, that increase has compounded such suspicions, has aroused fears

that even non-religious schools might be prey to religious takeovers.

And there's perhaps no better illustration of the complexities such fears can

arouse than the story of the so-called Birmingham Trojan Horse Affair.
