0:15.9	series. We're exploring the stories around Jesus's birth and the prophecies pointing forward to it.

0:26.0	Growing up, I remember hearing someone announce,
0:29.0	the world's going to hell in a handbasket.
0:31.0	It's a weird phrase, and I hear it all the time. I actually want to know where that came from but I
0:35.6	literally remember someone yelling that and to be honest even though I don't
0:40.2	quite know what it means I get the point that person was saying the arc of history it bends downward.
0:47.1	Things aren't getting better in the world. Things are in fact getting worse.
0:50.9	Humanity is in decline. Israel, they had to feel like this in the days of
0:56.8	Isaiah. Most of their ancestral land it had been conquered by Assyria, a foreign superpower.
1:03.9	And Assyria was closing in on what remained of Israel.
1:06.9	They were going to conquer everything.
1:09.1	The king at the time, King Hezekiah,
1:11.2	he ruled over the southern portion of Israel. It was called the Kingdom of Judah.
1:15.8	And when the King of Assyria comes, he literally conquers all of the cities around Jerusalem,
1:20.8	where Hezekiah was at, and he penned up Hezakiah like a bird in a cage.
1:27.0	And so Hezakiah thought that maybe he could just outlast a serious siege, but what he had left just a single city, was it even worth the effort?
1:36.4	Was it even worth the effort to try to resist the Assyrians who had conquered everything else?
1:41.2	What hope did Hezekiah have in this kind of situation, a world power against him, only one city left?
