Summary

Muscle Building Month wouldn't be complete without hearing from one of my longtime mentors and friends, Tom Purvis. I call him "The Yoda of Resistance Training," and you'll know why by the end of this episode.

Tom Purvis has been teaching personal trainers around the world for over 30 years.  A primary focus of Tom's work has been Exercise Mechanics since 1986 when he began researching & teaching.

Tom also exhibits a quality that I have found to be hugely important within my own journeys of fitness, coaching, and personal development: the ability to question your beliefs, and to challenge your thinking.

In today's episode you'll learn:

  • How to truly challenge muscles, not just lift weights.
  • What it takes to master skills, before working hard.
  • A framework for addressing progression.
  • Why improper mechanics are so commonplace.
  • Plus...the ONE thing you might just be missing in your own training, or as a coach.

Hey there, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the muscle intelligence podcast. I'm your host

0:12.5

Ben Pocoski. Today's podcast is with a guy who's changed my life, who's changed my understanding

0:19.0

of exercise, who still continues to this day to be a very

0:21.9

good friend and a close mentor, probably, in my opinion, the guy who knows most about exercise

0:26.8

in the entire world, specifically, biomechanics and anatomy, ultimately. And so he doesn't,

0:33.0

and he gets very adamant about this in the podcast. He doesn't talk about hypertrophy. He doesn't

0:37.7

talk about mechanisms. He talks about biomechanics. And biomechanics is the foundation of everything

0:42.3

you do in the gym. Ultimately, it's how you move, right? So how do I move in a squat? How do I move

0:47.5

and walking? How do I move in breathing? All of those are the study of biomechanics, how the body

0:52.0

moves. And Tom Purvis is an exceptional wealth of

0:56.2

information. Tom has been a very long time. He has an incredible understanding. And his understanding

1:03.4

is very much accurate, very much true to the purity of the human system. And Tom tends to get very strongly opinionated,

1:16.6

as you guys will see in the podcast, about people doing things outside of what he sees to be

1:22.0

accurate. And I don't think he's wrong. I think maybe there's context that we could apply it to outside of what Tom's beliefs are.

1:31.1

But Tom tends to think there's not.

1:33.7

And again, I think it's worth exploring.

1:35.9

My favorite thing to do is explore my beliefs, explore what I call my own bullshit, quote, unquote.

1:43.7

I apologize for cussing. But explore my own thoughts. Explore what I call my own bullshit, quote unquote. I apologize for cussing.

1:45.2

But explore my own thoughts, explore what I believe to be true.

1:49.5

And Tom does a really good job, as you guys see in this podcast, in challenging me,

1:53.1

and challenging what I believe, and challenging my theories and challenging my hypotheses.

1:57.3

And for me, I enjoy that.
