Claymouth County, Oregon

8-year-old Derek Engabretz and travels to Winham a national forest with his father and grandfather in order to get a Christmas tree,

but winds up becoming separated from them.

An extensive search effort fails to find Derek, though an eyewitness reports having seen a boy matching Derek's description,

struggling with an unidentified man near the road.

Years later, a convicted child predator named Frank Milligan confesses to Derek's murder,

but fails to leave the authorities to his body and recances confession,

so Derek continues to remain a missing person.

After that, the trail went cold.

I'm your host Robin Warder, and today we're going to be covering a pair of cold cases involving young boys who went missing in the wilderness.

The 1998 disappearance of eight-year-old Derek Engabretz and the 1975 disappearance of four-year-old Kurt Newton.

Since we've entered the month of December, our podcast is now going to be counting down to Christmas by covering cases which have some sort of connection to the holidays.

Derek Engabretz and went missing in the woods while on and outing with his family to get a Christmas tree,

and since the area would be hit with a snowstorm shortly thereafter,

the most likely explanation is that he simply died of exposure,

and the search efforts failed to find his remains.
