January 15th 2008 Chicago, Illinois

15-year-old Yasmin Akri is seen going to bed in the basement of a residence,

but she's discovered to be missing the following day and their signs of a break-in on the exterior

basement door. Over one year later, Jimmy Tarell Smith, who had previously lived in the upstairs

apartment at Yasmin's residence, is charged with a series of sex crimes and mentions of his name

are found in Yasmin's diary. Even though Smith claims to have knowledge of what happened to Yasmin,

these are never substantiated and no trace of Yasmin is ever found. After that, the trail went cold.

Warner and today we're going to be covering a missing persons case involving a teenage African

American girl, the 2000 Disappeareds of 15-year-old Yasmin Akri. Over the years, I received a few requests

to cover this one on the podcast as this is a sad story of a girl who endured an abusive

traumatic childhood before she was legally adopted by her aunt. After settling into a new life in

Chicago, Yasmin was seemingly missing in the middle of the night from her bedroom and residence

as basement, but even though there were signs of a break-in and a possible abduction, no one could

figure out what happened to her. The investigation went eventually focused on Jimmy Tarell Smith,

a tenant who had previously lived in the upstairs apartment of Yasmin's residence as he had an
