54-year-old Adele-born Williams returns to her suite at the Drake Hotel alongside her

daughter Patricia Goodbody when a woman dressed in black emerges from the bathroom.

The woman fires a shot into Adele's head before fleeing the scene and Adele dies the following day.

While one police lieutenant suspects Patricia being the killer and believes that the woman in black

did not exist, other evidence points to the hotel's desk clerk being the perpetrator in a

botch robbery attempt, but no one is ever charged with the murder. After that, the trail went cold.

The 1944 murder of Adele-born Williams. As you probably heard me mention many times,

this coming weekend I will be appearing at the True Crime Podcast festival at the Marriott

Downtown Hotel in Chicago, so I thought it only appropriate to precede the event with an episode

about a Chicago cold case. I decided to select this one because it took place in Chicago's Drake

Hotel, which is located only half mile north from the Marriott. The Drake is one of the city's most

historic hotels and has been around since 1920, but if you do a Google search on today's case,

most of your matches will be websites about haunted hotels. The legend goes that the Drake is haunted
