Summary

Over 2 hours ranking the best players in the NBA—we just needed that much time. This was one of the hardest years ever with so many stars healthy and playing at a ridiculously high level—we concluded that as many as 11 players could conceivably play at an MVP level in today’s NBA. See where LeBron, Curry, Harden, Kawhi, Jokic, Embiid, Doncic, AD, Luka, and Dame rank for us this year. Plus we get all the way down to the 20s ranking players this year because there are so many great ones. Also, our next NBA League Pass game is Monday, April 19 at 8:00 PM ET. Join us live for Phoenix at Milwaukee and send your questions for us to answer live on air using #NBACast on Twitter! Dunc’d On is exclusively ad-free four days a week, join us here! Get new bonus content as well like private Discord access, regular chats, our cap projections, subscriber mailbags, and more. Please read this letter about what you’ll get and why we are doing this, plus this FAQ for your more specific questions. With Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA) and Danny Leroux (@DannyLeroux).

I have time for one of our favorite episodes to do here, the top 10 players in the NBA.

0:08.3

And this is now, I first did this in 2014, going back and looking at some of those, it's

0:13.6

always fascinating.

0:14.6

We try to do that and say where we've gotten wrong in previous iterations.

0:20.3

But the way we are doing this here is we are pretending that right now at this moment,

0:26.0

a new regular season is starting and saying which player would we want for the duration

0:32.6

of that regular season and playoffs for guys that are injured.

0:37.0

We assume that they are able to come back like Jamal Murray, for example, will assume

0:42.0

that he's recovered from his ACL.

0:44.4

But we do factor in the idea that he might not be as good after coming back from that ACL.

0:49.6

Like when we did Kevin Durant last year, for example, he was still in these top 10 rankings,

0:54.1

even though he was out with the Achilles, we were basically just trying to project what

0:57.8

that player would do in his next season and fit them in.

1:01.7

So that is the general philosophy here, but there's much more to it also.

1:07.7

And I think another important consideration here is that part of the thought experiment

1:12.2

for us is that you are putting this player on a random team.

1:16.4

And so what that means is players who are, whose skill sets are narrowly tailored to

1:21.3

run a specific scheme or have a specific role, generally that is going to hurt.

1:25.8

Whereas players who are more versatile or who are so good that they can elevate most if

1:31.0

not any surrounding talent to a certain level, that is more valuable.

1:35.4

And if you can fit in as a like these are the top 10 players, so it's fitting into a

1:39.3

smaller piece, isn't necessarily as important, but it is a real value at, especially for
