Alexander DeMas, chapters 36 and 37. In the previous chapters, D'Artagnan reflected on the

trouble he was entangled in and seeked advice from Atos,

who warns him to stay away from Melady.

Strangely, Atos recognizes the ring Melady gave to D'Artagnan as one he owned once before.

Following Atos's counsel, D'Artagnan writes a letter to Melady, posing as the Comte,

to end their relationship.

Heartbroken, Kitty delivers the letter, prompting Melady to erupt in a furious rage and vow revenge on the

comp for rejecting her.
