Summary

In May of 1946, a violent crime unfolds just outside of Texarkana. A farm owner and his wife are shot multiple times by a mysterious attacker, who seems to have disappeared into thin air.

While the assault bears a resemblance to a recent string of murders in Texas, it features a number of notable outliers; outliers which make investigators hesitant to officially name it a part of the recent spree.

Over the next several decades, this case would grow cold. The murders would inspire an endless amount of theories, urban legends, copycats, and even a cult film, but the perpetrator - Texarkana's mysterious "Phantom Killer" - would never be identified.

Walter Virgil Starks was born on April 3, 1909. He was born to a farming family in the

0:21.8

area of Texarkana, and over time he would begin to go by his middle name, Virgil. During

0:28.2

his childhood, Virgil would meet a girl named Catherine Eilas Strickland, who went by a nickname

0:33.7

of her own, Katie. Like Virgil, she had been born in 1909, but a few months after him, on September

25. The two would remain friends throughout their childhood. As they began growing through adolescence,

0:46.5

their friendship took a more romantic turn. On March 2, 1932, when both were just 22 years old,

0:53.9

they decided to marry. They became Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Starks, and soon thereafter would move to a

1:00.5

modern, rant-styled house just northeast of Texarkana. This house, which was on a 500 acre farm,

1:07.1

would become the Stark's marital home. Virgil worked primarily as a farmer, but would occasionally do

1:13.4

some welding work for neighborhood farms. The home they lived in was just across the street from

1:18.1

Katie's sister, and was within two miles of both Virgil's brother and father. The couple would have no

children, but they lived a very comfortable life. They enjoyed one another's company, and they

grew to love each other dearly. May 3, 1946, was just like any other Friday for Virgil and Katie

Starks. Virgil, now 37 years old, called it quits in the early evening. Just before 9 pm, he was

1:44.3

finally getting to unwind and relax after an exhausting day. Virgil turned on his favorite weekly

1:50.4

radio show, and then sat down in his favorite chair in the family's sitting room, located just off

1:55.7

of the kitchen and the bedroom. As he listened to the radio, he began looking through the day's

addition of the newspaper. Katie brought her husband a heating pad for his sore back, and then

2:05.9

kissed him good night. She was tired, and began heading to the nearby bedroom to lie down for the

2:11.6

evening. She changed into her nightgown, and then laid down in bed, minutes passed. As Katie lays

2:16.9

there, she struggles to fall asleep. She hears some somewhat distracting sounds, which might have

come from the backyard, and she asks Virgil to turn down the radio. He gets up to act we ask,
