Mini camps wrap up next week and once the Steelers and the rest of the NFL break,

the league will have its first and really only

dead period of the season. That mid-June to late July window when team start training

camp is the only six-week period where the NFL essentially has nothing going on.

February post Super Bowl is a little dry, but that's about it.

The calendar is otherwise booked.

That's by design in order for the NFL to always be top of mind, always the center of conversation.

No other major American sport dominates the airwaves like that.

Basketball, baseball, and hockey all have prolonged off-season lulls.

So it's only logical for the NFL to want to bridge that final dead gap.

Here's my idea, an XFL draft. A say five-round draft where the

NFL plucks from XFL rosters. The leagues have partnered up and the

XFL is already an informal theater system to the NFL.

A draft would create more exposure to the XFL to keep its name around after their season

ends.

They're already losing these players back to the NFL anyway,

Hakine Butler and Luke Barcoo, signing with Pittsburgh,

for example.

So you might as well put the event on TV

if you're the XFL, there's real incentive there.
