I'm Melanie Friedlander. In the NFL, as in many cases in life, it doesn't pay to dwell on past

mistakes. Recognize it, understand what should have been done differently, and learn from it.

We certainly see that on the field as quarterbacks shake off an interception and move on with the next

series.

When it comes to the Steelers, one of the more glaring errors in recent years was the transition from franchise quarterback Ben Rothesberger. There was no good plan of succession. And it was time

to draft their next quarterback, the Steelers doubled down on bad decision-making. They let

outgoing general manager Kevin Colberg draft a class

of players right before he retired. That should have been Omar Khan's first draft as the new GM.

They reached for Kenny Pickett in the first round. He is now on his fifth NFL team, still as a backup.

Since then, the Steelers have brought in multiple veterans as stopgaps, with only back up Mason Rudolph hanging on his staying power.

With only two quarterbacks in the 26 draft class showing clear potential to lead NFL teams, and the Steelers drafting later in the first round, it's unlikely that Pittsburgh will find its next franchise quarterback this year.

The Steelers remain in limbo, waiting to see if

Aaron Rogers will run it back for one more season. That obviously isn't the long-term solution.

It also keeps Will Howard off the field, so the team still has no clear idea if he has potential

to be a starter. And Howard remains an unknown, having missed his entire rookie season due to injury.

There is no obvious answer for how the Steelers should solve the lingering problem at the quarterback position.

It's been four years since Rothesberger announced his retirement, and they still haven't figured it out.

With free agency slowing down, they may not find their answer there as well.

Kirk Cousins isn't going to bring

the Steelers their next Lombardi Trophy. Neither is Jimmy Garoppolo. What the team can and must do is stop

making the same mistakes, even if that means giving a virtual rookie the chance to succeed or fail.
