Appalachian Mysteria began with a story from Morgantown, West Virginia.

In season one, the W. V. V. Coed murders, Sarah and I were joined by Jeff Fuller,

with whom she co-wrote the book on the murderers, literally.

Together, we told the story of two West Virginia University college freshmen

whose heads were never found, their murderer never caught.

But even at the time, the events prompted many young women to come

forward with their own stories, men who had abducted them while hitchhiking or

tried to pick them up in a car with its door wired shut. The college and its students debated safety measures

that mostly centered on a lack of reliable student transportation, but by 1985

anyone paying attention could tell just how vulnerable WVU women still were 15 years later, and

someone was paying attention very closely.

Because from 1985 to 1992, over three dozen women were attacked by a serial rapist or rapists near

W. V. V. U. campuses.

The vast majority of sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone the victim knows.

On campuses, alcohol and drug-induced vulnerability

can make crimes of opportunity even more likely,

but the cases we're presenting here are different.

These attacks were carried out meticulously by a perpetrator or

perpetrators who chose and stalked their intended victims, learned their schedules

and routines, every detail down to the floor plan of their homes, all while avoiding detection for the better part of a decade.

Over the next two episodes, Jeff Fuller returns to help us tell one more story out of Morgantown the story of the Sunnyside

rapist. It's a saga that ranges from the WVU campus all the way to New Zealand.
