Hi, I am Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe and ESPN, and we heartily welcome you to the

Monday morning edition of the Sports Reporters podcast.

We're each Monday and Thursday, and we are coming off a weekend of just so much going on,

incredible stuff happening, not incredible stuff,

great athletic competition taking place, particularly in the NBA, and a wonderful ending

of a golf tournament, and lots of baseball records being broken, and Dodgers hit 57 home runs

in a month, blah, blah, blah, blah.

But we awakened this morning, and the Chadwick-Boseman story,

which is captivated and really engrossed the world of sport because he had a personal

connection with a lot of players. But we awakened this morning to find out that a literal and

figurative giant of college basketball has passed away, and that would

be John Thompson, age 78 of undisclosed nature right now that causes of death, but John

Thompson was, you know, I'm going to do it again, a towering figure, six feet ten, a large

man, but boy, did he put his imprint gentleman

on college basketball yeah he bob you know i i got to know him pretty well because of our

shared uh friendship with uh patrick you and obviously he was his best patrick's basketball

father i've been texting with Patrick this morning.

And Patrick says he was a great man.

And, and, you know, you look at his legacy,
