The Rocks is a neighbourhood of Sydney adjacent to the harbour and central business district

that has been a core part of the city almost since the founding of the Australian colony in 1788.

Historically, one of the city's slums, the rocks was once replete with gangs, drunken soldiers and prostitutes. To add to its

seedy past, the bubonic plague broke out in Sydney at the turn of the 20th century and the

rocks was especially devastated with thousands of the neighbourhood's buildings having to be demolished.

Today the area sees better times, having been converted into a tourist destination,

easy to access from central Sydney and brimming with historic sandstone buildings,

many of which are open to the public for exploration.

The rocks shows you the way Sydney was for much of the 19th century,

a hard place with a strong community and a big heart. Every building and street corner has a

story to be told. Some intriguing, some sad and some amusing. In this episode of the

True Hornings podcast, we pay homage to the first settlement of Sydney,

the rocks, an area you used to be able to smell before you caught a glimpse of it. It was the

birthplace of Sydney, the Sydney we know today, and it is definitely filled with ghostly
