All right, we're live. Hi, this is William Ramsey. Welcome to William Ramsey Investigates on tonight show. I have a very special guest. Her name is Marnie Rich Keenan. And she published an excellent book, which I read in its entirety. The title of the book, a true crime book is The Snow Killings. Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation, was published in June 2020. And it's really one of the best true crime books I've read about it. And I vaguely had remembered the whole story of the Oakland County Child Killer and how it was a terrible crime that took place back or crimes in a 13-month span between 1976 and 1977. So it's an older case, but still is reverberating up to the present day,

and Marnie can talk about that in greater detail.

0:44.4

So, Marnie, are you there?

0:45.5

I am.

0:46.3

Awesome.

0:46.6

Well, thanks for agreeing to the interview.

So for people who don't know your name or aren't familiar with this work, can you talk a little bit about your background and how you got involved with the Oakland County Child Killer investigation? Sure. I'm a journalist

1:01.6

and I've worked for newspapers and magazines for, dare I say, for 40 years, the last 26 years, I was a reporter and a columnist for the Detroit News.

1:16.6

And I grew up here in Oakland County, Michigan, so I knew the crimes well.

1:23.6

And I knew that the entire Metro Detroit area, and really anyone who lived here during that time was deeply affected by it and had never forgotten it.

1:38.0

And can you talk, I mean, so you were kind of right there in that area.

1:41.3

Can you describe that environment back in 1976? Sure. And For people who don't know this series of murders, can you

1:48.0

describe them in detail? Sure. First of all, Oakland County is

1:52.1

a county that's just about northwest of the city of

1:58.0

Detroit. At the time, it had about a million residents and for

2:03.4

decades it has been ranked one of the top five or ten affluent counties in the

2:10.4

nation. So when these crimes occurred it was you know for something like this to

2:16.3

happen it was almost inconceivable.

2:19.9

You know, we all enjoyed nice neighborhoods and nationally ranked schools. And, you know, in hindsight,

2:28.5

I think many of us will agree we were both naive and in denial, but beginning in February 1976 and lasting

2:40.3

for the next 13 months, four children ranged in age from 10 to 12 years old were really

2:48.5

plucked into thin air in broad daylight while walking on side walks or riding a bike, and they simply vanished.
