Matt Groening was born February 15, 1954 in Portland, Oregon. He attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1977.

After graduating, he moved to L.A. to become a writer. He went through a series of jobs while

living in L.A. He called him like a series of lousy jobs or whatever. But finally in

1978, he sold his first professional cartoon to Wet Magazine. He found employment at the

Los Angeles reader and eventually after showing the editor his cartoons, he was given a spot

for them in the paper. His comic Life in Hell in which he wrote for his friends

to describe his life in Los Angeles was loosely based on a chapter from Walter Kaufman's book
